A 16th Century Portuguese Witch Hunter who makes a living by arresting women accused of being the consorts of Satan, is sent to the Indian colonies by the Office of the Holy Inquisition: his life is thrown into turmoil when he is convinced he needs to possess a navaratna, a jeweled amulet.
